Four Items Today:
1. A new project, TheOpenDisc - http://www.theopendisc.com/ - will be replacing the no-longer-supported TheOpenCD (SSDD, see - http://sfd2007.gbztraining.com/2007/10/ -) Latest software list and versions is available at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDisc -
2. PDFCreator is one of my favorite programs on the disc and I want to bring it to the attention of the newer list members and remind others about it. Usable in Windows and Linux, once installed it shows up as another printer. By selecting PDFCreator as your printer, you get a PDF document without the need to purchase expensive proprietary software.
3. Also cross-platform (ie, Linux, BSD, Mac OS, and Windows) and on the disc is Audacity. Audacity is a fast multi-track audio editor and recorder which supports WAV, AIFF, Ogg, and MP3 formats. It has fancy features including envelope editing, mixing, built-in effects and plug-ins, all with unlimited undo. For non-audio engineers, Audacity also works great for converting records and cassettes to digital formats. There is a small, but growing, local community using Audacity.
4. GIMP (also cross-platform and on the disc) is a great digital imaging tool. I use it regularly for resizing images, touching up photos, creating banners, etc. Considered by some to have a steep learning curve, GIMP tutorials are EVERYWHERE! A quick YouTube search shows 217 video tutorials.
Help spread the word about Free (Libre) Open Source Software and tell your first cousin in Miami.
