Several members of this list commented favorably on the OLPC low-cost ($100) laptop

which I mentioned several weeks ago.
Another player in the low-cost laptop arena is Asus and the eee PC, which is shipping now. The eee is "Easy to Learn, Easy to Work, Easy to Play". The Asus website is

The model currently available in the US is priced at $399 with a 3.5 hour battery life, built-in stereo speakers, WIFI-ready, built-in webcam and microphone. The eee PC weighs in at only two pounds. That's right! Two pounds! The small size make it easy to take wherever you go!
The Eee PC is now shipping in the US via NewEgg

What does FOSS have to do with it? The eee PC uses a FREE Linux operating system and includes 40 pre-installed FOSS applications!
(Four models are scheduled for production and I expect to see this model for $299 or less by Christmas. I know what I hope to find in my stocking!)
