Some changes have been announced by the One Laptop Per Child ( http://www.laptop.org/ ) organization, a non-profit that has been working for over two years to develop a low-cost computer for kids. Among the changes are the cost which is now $188 per laptop.

But most surprising to me is that the laptops, now called XO Laptops, will be available for US consumers in January/February 2008. Originally targeted for distribution by government organizations in very large quantities (like a million!), the laptops will be available in a very unique buyone/giveone ( http://www.xogiving.org/ ) offer.

For $399 one XO Laptop will be sent to the purchaser and one will be sent to a child in Cambodia, Rwanda, Afghanistan or Haiti. About half the amount will be tax-deductible. Orders will be accepted beginning November 12 at http://www.xogiving.org/

While designed for children, the XO Laptop is a fully-functional, web-ready laptop with a full suite of applications and built-in video camera. The NiMH battery can be charged by household electricity, car battery, a handcrank, a footpedal, or even a pull-cord. All software on the XO Laptop is Free (Libre) Open Source Software.
